If you mention to any fisherman that you live in Devon the reply is likely to be “lucky you”‘. We are indeed lucky to have such a wide choice of waters offering trout, sea trout and salmon fishing. If you are looking for wild brown trout, sea trout or salmon you do of course have the Exe, the Taw the Torridge and the Tamar - rivers famous over the years for their beauty and sport waiting for the visiting fly fisherman.

To complement these famous rivers, Devon also offers many other very beautiful and productive rivers and streams. You have the Axe and its tributaries; the Culm a tributary of the Exe and the Claw and the Deer, small tributaries of the Upper Tamar noted for good Brown trout fishing. One must not forget the Dart and its little sister the Erme rising in the heart of lonely Dartmoor offering the fishermen scenery on the grand scale. Nearer the coast and also flowing down from from Dartmoor there is the Plym offering some good sea trout fishing in its lower reaches. For the dry fly fisher there is the Otter that starts its life in the Blackdown Hills and is noted for Brown trout of good average weight. The Teign, another river flowing down from Dartmoor offers, apart from some glorious scenery, good Brown trout, Sea trout fishing and the chance of Salmon when the water is right!  Dartmoor also gives birth to the Tavy, a river that flows through Tavistock on its way to the sea and provides Salmon and Sea trout through its main stretch and moorland Brown trout from its upper reaches. And for the romantic fisherman wandering in Lorna Doone country on Exmoor there is the Lyn with its good runs of Salmon and Sea trout.

That is a very brief guide to the fishing that awaits the angler looking for some of the most productive and accessible game fishing in England. Wherever you fish in Devon we do offer one last tip – take your camera. Even if you don’t capture the fish of your lifetime you will be capturing photos of some awe inspiring scenery!

These rivers also have their feeder tributaries making up an arterial network of waters to satisfy every taste. In addition we have moorland reservoirs and lakes that offer truly wild and spectacular sport for brown trout and rainbow trout.

And to complement all this you also have some superb commercial fisheries where one can fly fish for brown and rainbow trout weighing up to 20 lb!  On our Links page we present a selection of contact numbers to help you to locate these fisheries and other water.
